Job Description

Mountain River School, a small independent PreK through 8th-grade school in Morristown, Vermont, is seeking a Head of School. Our pedagogical approach honors all parts of a child’s development and offers opportunities to learn in a nurturing, learner-centered environment focusing on core skills, leadership, self-awareness, and mastery of foundational curriculum and project-based learning. Project-based learning is integral to our place-based approach that fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration.

MRS is a member of the Place Network, a branch of the Teton Science Schools. "The Place Network is a collaborative network of rural K-12 schools that connect learning and communities to increase student engagement, academic outcomes, and community impact."

The Head of School serves to provide holistic school leadership rooted in MRS’s mission and philosophy. At MRS we strive to support children in learning about themselves as individuals and as part of a community, guiding them to learn to speak a language of kindness, respect, and compassion for all. Exposure to nature helps students explore the connection between all living things, drawing upon their own innate knowing, intuition, and empathy. We practice mindfulness daily and are committed to cultivating and deepening our own awareness, personal relationships, and connections with the community.

The Head of School provides educational leadership and stewards the MRS community in developing the following core values to help cultivate strong global citizens:

We are looking for a dynamic, community-focused educational leader that has the capacity to set a positive tone and cultivate a heart-centered community while upholding the integrity of curriculum and program development; staff and faculty management; budgeting and finances; growth and development; marketing and fundraising; and collaboration with the Board of Directors.

The ideal candidate will have the following skills:
Enthusiasm for working with children in a PreK to 8th-grade environment
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Strong communication skills, both in speaking and writing
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
Entrepreneurial spirit, flexibility, initiative, and the ability to manage diverse responsibilities are essential
Strong administrative skills
The skills needed to develop measurable and meaningful goals for students across all disciplines in conjunction with the educators
The ability to monitor the progress of each student in conjunction with the educators
Ability to develop and encourage a culture of inquiry and innovation while keeping teaching practices that are reflective of current research in the field of learning differences
The skillset to expand school programming for students and families to enhance and enrich the experience for all member of the community

QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
1. B.S./B.A. in Elementary Education or a related field (educational psychology or leadership) required
2. Five years of teaching or working in an elementary program
3. Citizenship, residency, or work visa required
HIGHLY PREFERRED
1. A master’s degree in Education or a related field (educational psychology or leadership)
2. Seven-plus years of teaching or working in an elementary program
3. Managerial/leadership experience

Professional teaching staff
Support staff
Other resource and service personnel functioning within the school
