Somerville High School Principal
The Somerville Public School is actively seeking experienced, qualified candidates for the position of Principal of Somerville High School, effective July 1, 2021. The Superintendent of Schools has engaged the Collins Center at the University of Massachusetts Boston to assist the district with this search process.
Somerville High School (SHS) is a richly diverse and comprehensive, urban high school with 1,228 students and 168.6 FTE staff, including 121.1 FTE teachers. The SHS curriculum includes a robust academic program, and a range of specialized programs, including a dynamic Career Vocational and Technical Education program with 13 shops. SHS also offers a wide range of extracurricular and support services with an administrative support team of four (4) House teams, each led by a Principal. SHS celebrates many rich traditions while embracing innovative practices and numerous community partnerships in support of its educational mission. The Principal is the educational leader and chief administrative officer of Somerville High School. This leadership must be exercised at all levels: with students, teachers, parents, and the greater community. The Principal is charged with the responsibility of providing the best possible environment for teaching and learning. Therefore, they are totally responsible for the entire operation of the building and its administrative, instructional, and non-instructional personnel. This responsibility necessarily involves supervisory and administrative duties, which must be performed on both the formal and informal level with an aim towards efficiency and good morale.
The SHS Principal will be accepting delivery of a new high school building and will be charged with acclimating his/her staff along with his/her students to a new building. He/she may be charged with creating new protocols and procedures to ensure a smooth transition to the new building.
The successful candidate must possess excellent leadership, communication and listening skills, a dedicated commitment to the needs of all students, a strong focus on transparency, respect, and building consensus; and a proven ability to work collaboratively with staff and parents and the community-at-large. The position requires demonstrated experience and expertise in instructional leadership, management and administration, strategic planning, and a clear understanding of the curriculum needs of a comprehensive, urban high school.
The qualifications for this position include minimum of a Master’s degree; evidence of at least (5) years of successful teaching and/or administrative experience; and possession of a Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) license as High School Principal (9-12), or eligibility for such license.
The Somerville Public Schools is offering very competitive compensation and benefits package for this leadership position, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The start date for the successful candidate will be July 1, 2021.
